COLUMBIA, S.C. –The South Carolina Manufacturers and Commerce (SCMC) today led 33 local chambers of commerce and business associations – representing tens of thousands of employers and hundreds of thousands of employees across South Carolina – in support of SCDOT Modernization legislation, H. 5071 and S. 831.
“South Carolina businesses and families win when we are at our most competitive, and that’s why we strongly support SCDOT modernization,” said SCMC President and CEO Sara Hazzard. “Working together with legislative leadership and the governor, we’ve made significant investments in our infrastructure. But with record economic growth comes greater demand, and this legislation strengthens our foundation to support economic opportunity for years to come.”
The SCDOT Modernization legislation is expected to be taken up by the S.C. House of Representatives this week.
The bills include provisions to expand project delivery options, allow for public-private partnerships on large-scale projects, and implement choice lanes to reduce congestion and increase capacity. It also allows the state to take on federal permitting processes, helping streamline approvals and accelerate timelines.
“These improvements will accelerate project delivery – cutting timelines by months and even years – and ensure taxpayer dollars go the extra miles,” SCMC wrote in its letter to the S.C. House of Representatives. “As the state’s business community, we cannot afford to see this effort delayed another year. The need for action is clear, and the time to act is now.”
