Black History Month Spotlight:
Rodger Benson

A career in manufacturing can open doors across industries, communities, and even continents. Rodger Benson’s professional journey reflects the opportunities manufacturing creates and the leadership required to seize them.

Benson’s career spans more than 30 years, beginning after his service in the U.S. Army as a helicopter pilot. His path through what he calls “manufacturing America” ultimately led him to nearly 14 years with Starbucks Coffee Company, where he held multiple leadership roles with global reach.

Manufacturing, Benson notes, has positioned South Carolina as a destination for some of the world’s most recognized companies. The presence of global manufacturers such as Starbucks, Boeing, and BMW has elevated the state’s profile while providing meaningful careers for South Carolinians.

Most recently, Benson served as Director of Roastery Operations and International Manufacturing, leading global teams responsible for producing Starbucks’ most premium coffees, Starbucks Reserve, at elite Roasteries in cities including Seattle, New York, Chicago, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Milan. Collaborating with diverse, high-performing teams across cultures and continents remains one of the most rewarding experiences of his career.

Earlier, as Partner Resources Manager at the Sandy Run Roasting Plant in South Carolina, Benson helped strengthen ties between Starbucks and the surrounding community through mentorship programs, volunteer efforts, support for military veterans, educator engagement, and service on local boards. Throughout his career, he has consistently mentored emerging leaders and peers.

His advice to those entering manufacturing is grounded in experience: work hard to earn opportunities, become an expert in your role, and remain flexible as your career evolves. Strong performance opens doors, and adaptability ensures you are ready when new opportunities arise.
